Although this season brings exciting holiday parties, gifts and family gatherings, it also brings distracted drivers and an abundance of snow in many parts of the country. So, are you prepared to drive this holiday season?

Whether you’re visiting family out-of-state or going shopping at your local mall, teen drivers are encouraged to be extra cautious on the roads.

Here are a few tips to consider when driving this holiday season:

Take the time to winterize your car. Make sure the car battery, fluid levels, lights, windshield wipers, tires and brakes have all been checked before driving the car.

Don’t let your gas tank get close to empty. You don’t want to run out if you get stuck in traffic – or a snow bank.

No texting and driving. If you have to use your cell phone, pull safely over to the side of the road in case of an emergency.

Limit your passengers. The risk of fatal teen crashes increases with every additional passenger.

Wear your seat belt. Make sure everyone in the car, including your family members, are buckled up.

Get some rest. Pull over immediately to rest if you’re feeling overly tired.

Underage drinking and drug use is illegal. Even if you’re with your family, driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs can cost you your license – or even your life.

This year, we’re doing it again!

GEICO is inviting all students (ages 6-18) to enter its 25th Annual Safety Poster & Video Contest. Students will have the choice to create their poster or video around the three safe driving themes: The importance of wearing safety belts; no texting while driving; and staying focused to prevent distracted driving.

Here’s your opportunity to become a video sensation and show the importance of vehicle safety through sketch comedy, music video, song performance, documentary, viral video, reality show or animation. If you prefer graphics over video, you can showcase your artistic abilities through a hand-drawn or computer-generated poster that highlights safe driving.

The freedom to go where you want, to be liberated from the chains binding you to your parents. No longer will you have to ask your parent to drive you to school, to the mall, to your friend’s house. No longer will you be dependent upon their schedule, their wishes. Most kids dream of this promise of adulthood.

When I tried to describe to my mother my complete disinterest in learning to drive, the comfort and even relief I felt in not having that responsibility, she was less than sympathetic. Parents want their children to drive almost as much as the kids do themselves. Sure, they feel a sense of worry and anxiety, but once their kid gets a license, a parent no longer has to be a personal chauffer, spending all their free time driving.

My parents’ less than subtle nudging is the only reason I have made any progress at all in finding driving school and studying for the tests. While my peers all are anxious to be driving, I’m not. In fact, I’m dreading it. The minute I am in that car I am responsible for my own life and the lives of everyone else on the road, a lot of pressure for a fifteen year old to be under. I’m afraid that I’ll make a fatal mistake, of failing, of not being worthy of the responsibility. But I have to get my license…as my mom says; she won’t drive me around forever.
